The Power of Positive Relationships

Building positive relationships with both students and their parents from the start of the school year is essential for creating a supportive and effective learning environment. When students feel valued and understood by their teacher, they are more likely to be engaged, motivated, and willing to take academic risks. Equally important are strong, positive relationships with parents, which foster a collaborative partnership that enhances student success. Effective communication and trust between teachers and parents ensure that everyone is working together to support the child's learning and well-being, laying the foundation for a successful and harmonious school year.

Tips for forming positive relationships:

  • Initiate early communication: Consider intentionally reaching out to parents with student successes at the start of the year. This will allow you the opportunity to build a positive relationship with parents and begin building a foundation of open communication.

  • Set clear expectations: Clearly communicate your classroom expectations, goals, and how you plan to support students' success. Share this information with both parents and students to ensure everyone is on the same page.

  • Be accessible and approachable: Let parents and students know how and when they can reach you for concerns or questions. Being approachable early on helps build trust and open lines of communication.

  • Celebrate small wins: Recognize and celebrate students' efforts and achievements, both big and small early in the school year. Sharing these successes with parents reinforces a positive connection between home and school.
